Change Your Thinking, Change Your Life!

Change your thinking, change your life!

When Linda accepted Christ, her spirit was reborn, yet, she still had exactly the same body and her thinking and emotional patterns remained largely unchanged. Although she experienced the joy and freedom which comes with forgiveness of sins, she faced a daily battle not to fall into old habits and often expecting the worst. She had to learn to change her thinking to align with God’s thoughts about her, by reading the Bible and learning what her new identity in Christ actually means. There are instances and I have met people who at the time of their conversion, get totally delivered from a certain addiction such as alcoholism. However, the majority of people have to walk the road of restoration and perseverance in order to change bad patterns in their lives.

In Romans 12:2, God gives us the blueprint for living a fulfilled life, and it requires definite action on our part:

“Stop imitating the ideas and opinions of the culture around you, be inwardly transformed by the Holy Spirit through a total reformation of how you think. This will empower you to discern God’s will as you live a beautiful life, satisfying and perfect in his eyes.”(The Passion Translation)

The instruction in Rom 2 is not a recommendation, it is an instruction: “Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” Your mind is where change starts. It’s from the inside out, not the outside in. People can pray for you and counselors can talk to you and this can bring about relief, but if you want long term change, you need to start changing your mind to align with what God says about how to do life. Although your Spirit is renewed at the time of Salvation, the process of sanctification calls us to discipline and renewal in the realms of the mind, emotions and our bodies.

Sometimes we just want to use God as a magic wand. When we suddenly face problems which are bigger than we can handle, we want to run to church and get so-called spiritual people to pray with us and get the problem out of the way… then, we continue on our merry way with exactly the same mindset and emotional patterns as before. When the Word of God sinks into your spirit and it becomes part of your thinking, you are able to overcome these stumbling blocks with faith. The good news is that God wants you to mature so that each stumbling block of life will display God’s provision, grace, and love in your life, as you put your trust in Him and you refuse to be influenced by the accusations of Satan.
Paul gives us some insight into this:
“…Even in times of trouble, we have a joyful confidence, knowing that our pressures will develop in us patient endurance. And patient endurance will refine our character, and proven character leads us back to hope. And this hope is not a disappointing fantasy, because we can now experience the endless love of God cascading into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who lives in us!” Romans 5:3-5 (TPT)

When you become a child of God, your spirit gets renewed and you experience freedom and joy and a connection with the spirit of God. You learn to speak to Him and to listen to Him and a personal relationship develops. However, the chances are pretty good that you still sit with exactly the same body, with all its’ weaknesses and ailments. The good news is that Jesus died for all of you. The Bible states clearly that on the cross he bore our sins and sickness and disease. Why then do we not have a complete physical overhaul the moment we accept him? Living on earth, there are a couple of factors we could consider.

  • The fact that our bodies are destined to die.
  • The environments we live in which are destructive to healthy living, including food which is not necessarily healthy. The abuse we subject our bodies to in terms of stress, substance abuse, not resting enough, etc. Having given us a free will, God gave us a responsibility to look after our bodies. We therefore often simply reap the reward of bad choices, so let’s not blame it all on Him.
  • The reality of a fallen Satan, which inhabits the earth and is out to steal, kill and destroy. Please don’t overestimate him. He has no authority in the life of a believer, but when you entertain sin, you give him the right to occupy certain areas of your life. He is ruthless and will do what he can to get you to believe his lies.

Once we give our hearts to God, we embark on a journey of having our hearts and minds renewed by the Word of God which washes us, and helps us to think according to His principles and ways. Old thinking patterns need to make way for new ones, old ways of reacting need to be replaced by new ones. Hurt emotions need to be healed and restored to align with God’s purposes for us. This process is called sanctification and the major responsibility for becoming sanctified is on us, as God has done his part to provide everything we need to live successful and fulfilled lives. Now it’s up to us to accept it and apply it:

“May God give you more and more grace and peace as you grow in your knowledge of God and Jesus our Lord. By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know him, the one who called us to himself by means of his marvelous glory and excellence. And because of his glory and excellence, he has given us great and precious promises. These are the promises that enable you to share his divine nature and escape the world’s corruption caused by human desires. “2 Peter 1:2-4 (NLT)

Linda explained it to me like this: Her heart was like a garden and after having accepted Jesus as her Saviour, there were still some weeds in her heart, representing things like old thinking patterns and bad habits in her life. She had to be willing to pluck out the weeds, as the Holy Spirit made her aware of it, and replace it with the good seed of His Word and promises. Slowly her garden transformed and she is starting to bear beautiful fruit of faith, love, and kindness, visible to all those around her.
Be transformed by the renewing of your mind! Meditate on His promises, His goodness, His love. Allow God’s laws to be written in your heart and enjoy the reward of a changed life!
